Sugar Land, TX. – (May 19, 2025) – Nexus Water Group, Inc. (“Nexus Water Group”) and American Water Works Company, Inc. (“American Water”) today, May 19, 2025, announced they have entered into a definitive agreement for the sale of Nexus Water Group’s operations and assets in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia (Colchester).
Nexus Water Group President and CEO Rob MacLean said, “Nexus Water Group is committed to driving sustained growth and value through our long-term strategy. This agreement with American Water will allow Nexus Water Group to focus on a smaller core geography where we are better poised to grow and efficiently serve our customers. The sale also supports continued professional growth for our local employees in these areas.”
American Water has agreed to offer employment to the approximately 70 Nexus Water Group employees who operate these systems. Until the closing is complete, we will continue business as usual in our operations to maintain the local systems.
MacLean said, “Water and wastewater services are local. Our local team members and expertise are critical to these systems and their viability, and they are proud to continue to serve their neighbors.”
John Griffith, President and CEO of American Water, said the transaction is “good for customers and another example of the execution of American Water’s core growth strategy.” He added, “Through this agreement, American Water will grow in eight of our existing regulated states and leverage our scale and size to deliver safe, clean, reliable and affordable water and wastewater services to nearly 47,000 new customer connections. Additionally, we believe this expansion will lead to even more growth in those states as communities continue to look for water and wastewater solutions.”
The transaction requires regulatory approval in seven of the applicable eight states, and both Nexus Water Group and American Water are committed to working together to ensure that the transition will be seamless to customers throughout the transition and beyond. The companies estimate that closing will take place in the summer of 2026, following regulatory approval by the applicable state Public Service Commissions.
